Argentina's Economy Minister Defends Exchange Rate

The Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, defended the current exchange rate in response to those who argue that it is lagging. "A world first: an economic program that boosts exports to record levels with a 'lagging' exchange rate," posted the head of the Ministry of Finance alongside a graph showing the increase in foreign sales. In this way, the minister sought to mark his position against economists and private sector leaders who believe that the "dollar is cheap" and this is a hindrance to the development of the economy. Many of these criticisms are based on the closure of companies or the replacement of production lines with imports that have come to light in recent months. The minister's post does not allow for discrimination as to which sectors are driving that increase in exports.

Furthermore, he does not accept questions to investigate the profile of foreign sales, as requested on several occasions by Noticias Argentinas agency. Nevertheless, private reports and even the latest publications from INDEC show that growth is concentrated in sectors with competitive advantages derived from natural resources such as energy (Vaca Muerta) or the agribusiness sector.
